"Sepsis Does Not Wait": A Call for Proactive Systems and Collaborative Reform

Share:

A significant briefing at the Oireachtas has highlighted a critical opportunity for the Irish healthcare system: the potential to save lives through the consistent, timely activation of sepsis protocols. Delivered by leading experts and dedicated advocates, the message to TDs and Senators focused on the life-saving power of early recognition. The briefing emphasised that we have the clinical knowledge and the tools to succeed; the next step is ensuring our systems are designed to act with the speed that sepsis requires.

At Whelan Law, we view this testimony as a constructive roadmap for the future of patient safety. By adopting established international models, Ireland has the chance to lead the way in proactive, system-driven care.

A Call for Clinical Consistency

Professor Steve Kerrigan of the RCSI emphasised the urgency of the issue, stating, "Sepsis does not wait—and neither should we". He noted that the solution lies in optimising hospital systems to react immediately when a patient's condition begins to decline.

The Oireachtas briefing was further informed by families who have transitioned from personal loss to global advocacy. This further highlights that although sepsis protocols are technically in place in Ireland, their application remains inconsistent and the assessment of their use is frequently too lenient.

Implementing Mandatory Safety Initiatives

There is a compelling argument for Ireland to transition from optional standards to a designated, named Patient Safety Initiative for sepsis. Similar to the successful implementation of Martha’s Rule in England, a mandated rule in Ireland would eliminate ambiguity, ensuring that suspected sepsis triggers a mandatory clinical response rather than a discretionary one.

  • Rory’s Regulations: Ciaran Staunton detailed how the tragic loss of his son, Rory, catalysed the creation of mandatory protocols in New York, providing clear roadmaps for early diagnosis.

  • Survivor Perspectives: Survivors at the briefing reinforced that while sepsis is grave, rapid intervention offers significant hope for recovery.
