Marking World Patient Safety Day 2025: Our Commitment to Safer Healthcare for All

At Whelan Law, our daily work advocating for individuals and families impacted by medical negligence reinforces the critical importance of patient safety. As World Patient Safety Day approaches on September 17, 2025, organised annually by the World Health Organisation (WHO), it serves as a crucial global reminder of our collective responsibility to make healthcare safer.

World Patient Safety Day is a worldwide initiative dedicated to raising awareness, fostering understanding and mobilising action to improve patient safety. Each year, the WHO highlights specific aspects of patient safety, encouraging healthcare providers, policymakers, patients and their families to work together towards preventing harm in healthcare settings. It's a call for vigilance, continuous learning and systemic improvements that transcend borders.

We have consistently advocated for greater transparency, accountability and compassionate responses within the Irish healthcare system. Our experience, through numerous cases, has shown us the devastating impact when patient safety protocols fail and communication breaks down.

This day offers an important opportunity to reflect on progress made and the challenges that remain. From advocating for better open disclosure practices to highlighting the potential of innovative technologies like AI in early warning systems, our firm is dedicated to contributing to a future where healthcare is genuinely safer for every patient.

We urge everyone involved in healthcare – from leaders and practitioners to patients and their families – to renew their commitment to making patient safety a fundamental pillar of all healthcare delivery. Our firm will continue to champion these vital discussions, striving for a healthcare environment where safety is paramount, and every individual's well-being is protected.
