Patient Safety Medical Negligence Martha's Rule in the Irish Healthcare System

PATIENT SAFETY MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE MARTHA’S RULE IN THE IRISH HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

Martha’s Rule has not been formally adopted within the Irish healthcare system.

In Ireland, obtaining second opinions or escalating concerns about a Patient's condition typically occurs on a case by case basis.  There is no standard publicly funded system like Martha’s Rule that provides Patients and families with 24/7 access to rapid clinical review by an independent team.

There has been significant positive outcomes following the implementation of Martha’s Rule in the UK such as improved Patient Safety and reduced harm.

Although Martha’s Rule hasn’t been introduced as part of the Irish healthcare System, its principles and the outcomes observed in the UK may serve to prompt debate on Patient Safety and Medical Negligence in Ireland.
