Whelan Law on WLR FM: Discussing Patient Safety & the Joe Flynn Vs HSE Case

We were delighted to be invited to the 'Deise Today' show on WLR FM in Waterford yesterday to discuss the significant Joe Flynn -v- The HSE case. This has naturally been very difficult for the family involved, but it also has wider implications for patient safety rights across Ireland.

During the discussion, our Principal, John Whelan, had the opportunity to discuss the specifics of Esther (Essie) Flynn’s case with presenter Damien Tiernan.

He also discussed the crucial issues surrounding patient safety and the recent Patient Safety (Notifiable Incidents and Open Disclosure) Act 2023. It's a key piece of legislation that, had it been fully in force at the time of Esther Flynn's tragic death, could have led to a very different and more open process for the family.

The Act mandates that healthcare providers offer both explanations and apologies to families affected by serious medical incidents, a practice that we believe should be standard in all circumstances.

The conversation on WLR FM highlighted the ongoing need for transparency, accountability and compassion in our healthcare system. The Joe Flynn -v- The HSE case serves as a powerful reminder of why robust patient safety measures and open disclosure are so vital.
