Martha's Rule: A Welcome Step for Patient Safety

Share:

The introduction of Martha’s Rule in English hospitals marks a significant and welcome advancement in global Patient Safety standards. This initiative is a powerful acknowledgement that patients, families and carers are often the first to recognise when a condition is deteriorating, and their concerns must be acted upon immediately.

At Whelan Law, we fully welcome this proactive shift towards patient empowerment and believe it represents the kind of systemic change that should be championed in Irish healthcare.

Recognition for the Champions of Change

We were delighted to see reports recognising the vital work of specialists like Claire Wright, the Martha's Rule Specialist Nurse at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Swindon. Ms. Wright's recognition with the Star of the Month award highlights the dedication required to implement such a crucial patient safety measure on the ground. Her commitment to promoting inclusivity and accessibility ensures that all patients, regardless of culture or language, can access the care they need. We congratulate Ms. Wright for championing this vital cause.

What Martha's Rule Means for Patient Safety

Implemented in English hospitals from April 2024, Martha’s Rule provides a clear, official pathway for patients, their families or carers to escalate concerns about a patient's deteriorating condition. It guarantees access to a rapid review from a dedicated critical care outreach team.

This initiative is named after Martha Mills, who died in 2021 following a failure to escalate her care despite her family’s repeated concerns about her worsening condition.

Advocating for Implementation in Ireland

While Martha’s Rule is currently specific to the NHS, its core principle is universally applicable. It offers a clear blueprint for Irish health leaders seeking to improve patient safety and restore public trust.

Whelan Law firmly believes that adopting similar, patient-led rapid review mechanisms is essential to ensuring that the voice of the patient is heard when it matters most, reducing the risk of deterioration and avoidable deaths across the Irish healthcare system.
